Gambling Invest’s domain monitoring service uncovered that at the end of July, The D Las Vegas casino became the new owner of several “grandissimo” domains, including grandissimo.net, grandissimovegas.com and grandissimolv.com.
Grandissimo.net was for several years available for sale through the Buy Domains marketplace until it was dropped in March 2012. The domain was then picked up in January 2014 by Detroit law firm Dickinson Wright, which around the same time also registered grandissimovegas.com and grandissimolv.com.
The whois details of the three domain names were updated in July this year when The D Las Vegas casino replaced Dickinson Wright as the listed owners, but Gambling Invest believes that the Michigan law firm had registered the domains on behalf of Derek and Greg Stevens, the Detroit brothers who control The D and that in January 2014, Dickinson Wright helped obtain a trademark for Grandissimo in relation to restaurant, hotel and entertainment services.
According to several people Gambling Invest spoke to in Vegas as well as multiple internet rumours, the Las Vegas Club, a Downtown Vegas casino and hotel which the Stevens brothers acquired in August this year for $40 million, is the most likely candidate for a rebranding to become the Grandissimo.
Just few months before the domains were registered in January 2014, David Schwartz, Director of Gaming Research at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, published “Grandissimo The First Emperor of Las Vegas”, a biography of casino entrepreneur Jay Sarno. Best known for having built Caesars Palace and Circus Circus, according to Wikipedia, Sarno died in 1984 while planning his next hotel venture, a ultra luxury casino to be called “Grandissimo”.
Now 40 years later, a new generation of casino entrepreneurs are finally likely to complete Sarno’s dream and a Grandissimo casino could soon become a tourist attraction in Downtown Las Vegas.
